If you have tried therapy in the past, only to get placed with a therapist who did not connect well with you or help you make any real progress, I have been there!
Taking the leap to actually make an appointment with someone is HARD.
You work up the courage to search for providers covered by your insurance and all you’re given is a laundry list of names and little else.
How exactly are you supposed to make an informed decision?
You start combing through specialties, professional titles, and invent a sorting method on the spot. A million years later, you Google a few contenders and decide to book an appointment. But are they taking new clients? Do the office hours work with your schedule? When can you even get an appointment?
It’s a headache and honestly, with this method, the chances of finding someone you actually work well with are not great.
There have been several times in the past when the process of trying to find a therapist was enough to make me say, “screw it.”
Plus it’s expensive?!?!
No thank you.
It took me a long time to realize this. I’d actually given up on counseling for a long time, but then I tried remote talk therapy and it completely changed the game for me.
It has been by far the BEST counseling experience for me.
BetterHelp paired me with a wonderful therapist who relates to me well and is someone I actually enjoy working with (something that did NOT happen with previous therapists).
I took a quiz before I got placed with a counselor that took into account my main concerns and preferences and was a paired with Rachel. She was easy to talk to and helped me feel comfortable diving into difficult topics at a pace that felt manageable for me.
For the first time, I was working with someone who was able to pull some useful insights out of me and actually helped me make progress in areas I’d been stuck on forever.

Programs like AA and SMART Recovery are incredibly effective. So is counseling. If you are someone who, for whatever reason, is not keen to do an in-person recovery program, counseling is a great alternative. Plenty of people do both.
BetterHelp is MY preferred method for effective counseling. If you have been struggling to find that in your local community, as I have, it is well worth it.
