Sparkling Strawberry Mocktail with Chilis

I used to love the bite of an alcoholic drink. The fizziness, the punch of flavor – I loved it! Those are elements I aim to recreate whenever I make mocktails. The easiest way to achieve that flavor punch to the throat? Carbonation and spice. This spicy strawberry mocktail recipe has both!

For this recipe, you’ll need a few simple ingredients. And if any of these don’t float your boat, I’ll provide substitutions and variations at the end.

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup strawberries
  • 1 red or green chili (seeds removed)
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 10 mint leaves
  • Ice cubes
  • 1 cup sparkling water

A note on chilis. Different chilis have different heat levels. If you opt for a serrano or red Thai chili pepper, I highly advise using half a chili, blending your ingredients, and taste-testing to see if you want to add more heat.

Feeling a little apprehensive about the chilis? You can’t go wrong with a jalapeno.

How to Make a Sparkling Strawberry Mocktail with Chilis

Step 1: Wash the strawberries thoroughly and remove the stems. Cut them into halves and set aside.

Step 2: Wash your chili and remove the seeds. Finely chop them. Please be careful when handling and chopping chilis. They can be extremely irritating. Wash your hands immediately after and for the love of God, please do not rub your eyes (I speak from a painful personal experience on this one).

Step 3: In a blender, add the chopped strawberries, chilis, honey, and mint leaves. Blend and process the mixture until the texture is smooth and velvety.

Step 4: Take a glass (cocktail, margarita, or high ball), and fill it up halfway with ice.

Step 5: Pour the mixture into your glass of ice until it is about 3/4 full. Then, top off your glass with sparkling water. Stir gently to combine. Add fresh strawberries and mint leaves for garnish. Enjoy!

Sparkling Strawberry Mocktail with Chilis: Variations and Substitutions

  • Change the chilis: For those who are sensitive to spice, choose a milder pepper like a jalapeno or poblano pepper. Start with 1 tbsp of chopped pepper and adjust the spice level accordingly.
  • Try other sweeteners: Agave syrup, maple syrup, or simple syrup can be used as alternatives to honey, catering to vegans or those who prefer a different kind of sweetness.
  • Mix up your sparkling water: To change the texture or flavor profile, you could use tonic water, club soda, or even flavored sparkling water (like lime or lemon) to add an extra dimension to the mocktail.
  • Experiment with different herbs: Basil or cilantro can be used as an alternative to mint leaves for a different aromatic experience. Basil offers a sweet, floral note, while cilantro brings a fresh, citrusy edge.
  • Try different berries: Add other fruits to the blend for a more complex flavor. For example, raspberries, blueberries, or mango can complement the strawberries well and add color and variety to the drink.
